Here are a couple of shots of the new light when lit and then unlit:
It was very easy to make, and didn’t cost a lot. I started with a flexible LED strip from Oznium – I used the red (duh) in the 19″ size. When no power is applied, the whole thing is clear, so is very subtle when not in use. Here’s what you get from Oznium:
I then took a suitable length of 1/2″x1/2″ aluminum angle and gradually bent it to the shape of the rear window. I just kept leaning on it and trial fitting it (to the outside of the window) until it fit the curve nicely. Note that it needs to be bent in 2 dimensions to fit flush up against the sealing rubber all the way long its length. Using the 3M 2-sided tape that came with the LED strip, I stuck the strip inside the aluminum angle and added a length of self adhesive weather stripping to the top:
Another short length of aluminum was bent to shape with pliers for use as a single mounting bracket. I drilled a single hole in the flange that is directly above the upper window sealing rubber (being careful not to drill through the roof!), and it looks very neat on the inside too:
